Ground Source Heat Pumps

Overview
Ground source heat pumps work by transferring energy from the ground into efficient space and water heating. Making use of this clean, renewable energy stored in the ground means ground source heat pumps are suitable for eco-friendly projects as well as other building types.

Types of ground source heat pumps:

  • Borehole: a vertical coil is fitted to a depth of up to 200 meter making this type of heat pump the space saving option.
  • Straight horizontal: pipes are laid in trenches which makes this cheaper than a borehole but it requires more land area
  • Spiral horizontal or ‘slinky coil’: flattened coils of overlapping piping are laid into a given amount of space reducing the amount of required ground area and trench length.
